Welcome to IQ’s Science Issue
IQ presents undergraduate interdisciplinary research engaging with the sciences to include Earth Science, Biology, Oceanography, and Astronomy. We explore Earth: The Perfect Planet (Ajay Manfra) by travelling from Australia’s spectacular Great Barrier Reef (Steven Ganas) to the magnificent glaciers and ice sheets of the essential Antarctic: Earth’s Future (Angelena Zuzek).
We also traverse the American West to consider Advances in Biology and Cartography from the Expedition of Lewis and Clark (Tyler Johnson). In determining What Makes it Unique? (Michaela Duffus), we consider Earth’s place in the Solar System and the Interdependent Dynamics that Sustain Life on Earth (Ashley Gorman-Sortland) as well as the sublime ecosystems that grace our water world now (alas) impacted by Climate Change (Steven Ganas).
While the universe is replete with the elements that have made life possible on Earth, we have yet to find her match. As Ashley Gorman-Sortland notes, “so far, [scientists] have found nothing like Earth which emphasizes the uniqueness of our planet” (Van den Heuvel). As such, our undergraduates agree that the best course of action is to preserve the beautiful world that we live in: “The more research conducted and the more advancements we have in science paired with our best efforts to help curb CO2 production and clean up our waters, the better hope we have to save the coral reefs” (Steven Ganas).
IQ celebrates Planet Earth, her magnificent biodiversity, and any interdisciplinary research that may save the day for future generations. We hope that you enjoy the issue!https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4d/The_dazzling_colours_of_the_Great_Barrier_Reef
